چکیده

We describe and evaluate a new instrument design called a Tunable Echelle Imager (TEI). In this instrument, the output from an imaging Fabry-Perot interferometer is cross-dispersed by a grism in one direction and dispersed by an echelle grating in the perpendicular direction. This forms a mosaic of different narrow-band images of the same field on a detector. It offers a distinct wavelength multiplex advantage over a traditional imaging Fabry-Perot device. Potential applications of the TEI include spectrophotometric imaging and OH-suppressed imaging by rejection. Subject headings: techniques: interferometric, miscellaneous, photometric, spectroscopic

Abundances of Extremely Metal-Poor Star Candidates

We present chemical abundances for 110 stars identified in objective-prism surveys as candidates to be very metal-poor. The abundances are derived from high S/N, intermediate-resolution spectra obtained with the Keck Observatory Echelle Spectrometer and Imager. An additional 25 stars with well-determined abundances ranging from [Fe/H]= −1.5 and −3.2 were observed and the results used to help ca...

NEW DAMPED Lyα METALLICITIES FROM ESI SPECTROSCOPY OF FIVE PALOMAR SKY SURVEY QUASARS

This paper presents chemical abundance measurements for 12 new z > 3 damped Lyα systems discovered toward five quasars from the Palomar Sky Survey. We determine H I column densities from profile fits to the observed damped Lyα profiles and measure ionic column densities and limits for all observed metal-line transitions. This dataset, acquired with the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager on the ...

The Dark Matter Density Profile of the Lensing Cluster Ms2137-23: a Test of the Cold Dark Matter Paradigm

We present new spectroscopic observations of the gravitational arcs and the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the cluster MS2137-23 (z = 0.313) obtained with the Echelle Spectrograph and Imager on the Keck II telescope. We find that the tangential and radial arcs arise from sources at almost identical redshifts (z = 1.501, 1.502). We combine the measured stellar velocity dispersion profile of t...

Internal Dynamics, Structure and Formation of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies: I. A Keck/HST Study of Six Virgo Cluster Dwarfs

Spectroscopy with the Keck II 10-meter telescope and Echelle Spectrograph and Imager is presented for six Virgo Cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the absolute magnitude range −15.7 ≤ MV ≤ −17.2. The mean line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion are resolved as a function of radius along the major axis of each galaxy, nearly doubling the total number of dEs with spatially-resolved ...

Joint Cosmic Shear Measurements with the Keck and William Herschel Telescopes

The recent measurements of weak lensing by large-scale structure present significant new opportunities for studies of the matter distribution in the universe. Here, we present a new cosmic shear survey carried out with the Echelle Spectrograph and Imager on the Keck II telescope. This covers a total of 0.6 square degrees in 173 fields probing independent lines of sight, hence minimising the imp...
